The Invisible Council

The author

Behind the ten, one reader

The series has one author. Not a team, not a studio, not a pipeline left running: one person, who read these ten for years before any of them sat down. The name stays off the page because a council with a host in front of it is not a council. Everything else about the work is here.

  1. 01

    Four decisions, one desk

Which question goes to the table. Who speaks to it and who stays quiet. What each of them answers, and why. Where the episode stops. Four decisions, all taken by the same person, all taken before anything is made.

  2. 02

    The shelf behind each seat

Every counsellor has real books behind him: what he wrote, the letters he left, and the arguments scholars have had about him since. They are listed on his own page. That list is not decoration. It is there so a reader who thinks the reading is wrong can go to the same books and prove it.

  3. 03

An interpretation, and it says so

Nobody here is quoting. What a counsellor says is one reader's answer to a question that counsellor never heard, written in the way that mind worked. No line is passed off as something he wrote. No line is passed off as something he said.

  4. 04

    What the machine does

The faces, the voices and the room are generated, and every page that could be taken for a recording says so. What the machine never does is choose. It is handed a table, a question and the answers, and it makes them visible. The thinking was finished before it started.

  5. 05

    Why the name stays off

A council with an author standing in front of it is not a council. That is the whole of it. Nothing is being kept from anyone: every line on this site and in every episode is one person's responsibility, and the form on the contact page reaches that person and nobody else.

Such as are thy habitual thoughts, such also will be the character of thy mind; for the soul is dyed by the thoughts.
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations V.16, trans. George Long

Correspondence

A question about the series, about a source, or about how a counsellor was read gets a direct answer. Press and partnership messages arrive at the same desk.
